Roberto Bignoli, the Italian singer and songwriter most known in the Christian music world, is a restless bluesman and rocker travelling worldwide not just for singing but mainly for testifying his faith, his discovery of God after a troubled period of his life, as he says in his interview.
“In the 80s I experienced the protest. I protested and I was proud of it because I thought that this action could change the world. In my life I did several crazy things, I used drugs, I believed in the beat generation, I believed in violence. But suddenly I entered a church and began to pray, to pray the rosary and to sing songs which had nothing to do with those I sang before”, says Roberto in his interview.
Roberto’s artistic production is a message of love and hope, through simplicity and stories on nowadays’ reality he is always trying to speak to the heart and help people who passed through great difficulties, as he did when he was a child.
One of Roberto’s most famous song is “Concerto a Sarajevo” (Concert in Sarajevo). He wrote it when he went to Bosnia in peacetime. Someone listened to it and in wartime it was transmitted by underground radios. This song is dedicated to an unforgettable person, Bishop Tonino Bello, a witness of faith who strongly believed in peace and in solidarity. It is also linked to his personal experience, when in a humanitarian travel he met those deported children and raped women, raped from their neighbors, people they thought were friends. Their cry and their hatred became his famous song. As there are many Sarajevos in the World, Roberto decided to continue to sing for other Sarajevos, for the pain, for those people who often pay an high price: children, women, elderly people…
Roberto Bignoli is the only Italian singer that won three times the “Unity Award”, the prestigious American award considered as the “Grammy” for Christian singers. The first time was in 2001, as best artist and for the best song of international Christian music, “Ho bisogno di te” (“I need you”). Then in 2005 for the record “Là c’è un posto” (“There is a place”). That same year another winner was Pollyanna Dorugh, the sister of Howie D. of the Blackstreet Boys, with the song “We will meet again”. And finally in 2007 with 2 awards again, one as best international artist of the year and for his song “Dulcis Maria – Totuus Tuus” (“Sweet Mary – I am all yours”).
