Opera for Solist, Recitative, Choir and Orchestra [3:58]

“A Piedi Scalzi" - Barefooted - is a modern Oratory Opera, in eight parts, relating to the life and spiritual path of Edith Stein, who became a Discalced Carmelite with the name of Teresa Benedict of the Cross, and died in the Auschwitz Birckenau concentration camp on the 9 August 1942.

Canonized by Pope Jonn Paul II on 11 October 1998, the follwing year she was proclaimed patron saint of Europe together with S. Caterina of Siena and S.Birgit of Sweden.

The Oratory is written for chorus, orchestra, solist and recitative voice, the style of music changes in all the eight sections that illustrate eight relevant phases of the life of Edith Stein.

About the Opera

The Libretto by Giampiero Pizzol and the music of Alessandro Nidi, successfully introduce us to the dramatic climate of the life of this famous philosopher and teacher, a daughter of Israel who converted to Catholicism and entered the Carmelite Convent of Cologne in 1933 and then the one at Echt, in Holland, where she was arrested by the Gestapo on 2 August 1942, and a week later gassed together with many other people at Auschwitz.

Il nove, otto del quarantadue, io,
cittadina tedesca, donna ebrea,
rinacqui a Birkenau:
era una splendida domenica di agosto,
il più bel giorno per morire in Cristo.

Contammo i giorni passati: erano sette.
L’ottavo giorno cominciò di notte
quando scendemmo a frotte giù dai treni
tra gli occhi spaventati dei bambini.

Appena giunti ad Auschwitz
ci tolsero la veste e il velo.
Restarono soltanto i piedi scalzi
come perenne segno del Carmelo.
